It took forever for these to render mostly because of how I smudged out the original text. There may be a video or two I don't directly subtitle the pre- and post- gameplay sequence due to sheer amount of though. I'm pretty happy with how my subtitles turned out. The focus remains on military but there are some geopolitics involved too (eg you can decide a strategy to take during events like the Berlin airlift, Korean War, etc). Here's my next batch of Ace Combat 3.

Darkest Hour is superior in my opinion to HOI3 despite being based on an earlier game engine, and has a very good mod called "New World Order" that simulates the cold war.

Hearts of Iron series / Darkest Hour - Grand strategy wargame where you can play as the USSR. Make sure you get the expansions if you get this, they add a lot. You can play as a communist / socialist nation which has effects on how the economy works, etc. Victoria 2 - set from 1836-1936 - communist revolutions come into play at the end of the game. Shadow President (You play as the US "shadow president" controlling most aspects of the USA during the close of the cold war. I'd probably just get Tropico 4 as you don't miss much and it's more appropriate for patientgamers (cheaper then 5). Tropico (south american president simulator/city builder, with the cold war featuring heavily). Hidden Agenda (cold war era South American president simulator) Not explicitly Soviet but you might also be interested in: Not sure how accurate the portrayal of pioneer life is, but the author is Russian, I think?
#Combat 3 unity simulator#
It's a dating/romance simulator done in anime style set in a komsomol (soviet youth league) camp. It's set during the Russian Civil War following the revolution.Įverlasting Summer - This one is weird. Still, you might find the subject matter compelling enough to get you through it. Revolution Under Siege - I found this one very difficult to get into to be honest, as it's a very detailed wargame and I lately lack the patience for this style of game. There's also a more modern spiritual remake for purchase on Steam. You can run the US or Soviet space programs with the intent of being the first to land on the moon. :(īuzz Aldrin's Race into Space - Excellent space race simulator from the 1990s, although it can be frustrating.

This will be hard to get running because it's an old windows executable and won't work in dosbox. It's simple on the surface, but deceptively complex at times.

Download it to get the US version.īalance of Power - Geopolitical game where your goal is to increase your global influence without causing a nuclear war. You can play US or Soviets ("Commonwealth", CIS I guess) although the online play version on that site only has the USSR side. The interface is clunky as all hell but this is the most realistic nuclear war simulator I've come across. It's a simulator of a nuclear war between the USSR/USA. Very difficult, but an interesting portrayal of the perestroika era USSR just before it fell.īravo Romeo Delta - another 80s/90s era game. KGB/Conspiracy - Excellent early 90s adventure game. Don't expect to do much better than actual history, although you can play till 2020 or something if you're good enough. It's also VERY difficult - you're up against almost insurmountable odds, a hostile USA, a collapsing economy, a strengthening democratic/liberal resistance, and a secret police and military that are keeping a close eye on anything you do and won't hesitate to try and topple you. It's dated, but authentic in that it's made during the period and really nails the feel. It's a strategy game starting in the late 80s where you have to do your best to keep the union together. You may get something similar to a "Papers Please" vibe from it. I have included purchase links where possible.Ĭrisis in the Kremlin - I think this is your best bet. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by doing so. Most are so old and almost impossible to find that they're impossible to link you to purchase points so I've tried to direct you to some download sites. :) There's a few old titles you might enjoy, if you know your way around dosbox.
